The top 5 alternatives to YouTube in Germany

However imagine you are a businessman from Berlin travelling abroad or perhaps a student studying in a different country — all your familiar home channels would be blocked to you by default.

If you do need to get yourself a German IP address, I used to recommend the company Overplay, But their servers have become rather slow. So a great alternative is the company called Smart DNS Proxy, they have a free 14 day trial which you can try for yourself. All I can say is that the Overplay servers are generally fast and not overloaded.

However the best advice is to sign up for a short trial or email them and ask for a test. In the picture above, I can see some other countries. Are these included in the subscription or do you pay extra? Is there a way to check the speed of the specific server before you sign up?

Hi Mifeestidge, The results will be different for everyone and depend on a variety of factors including your location and ISP. CONS Dailymotion's video quality is improving quickly but is still, generally speaking, not as high as Vimeo's. MyVideo's German branch offers "Musik TV" curated channels, chart and genre lists and a search-your-own selection of original music videos. PROS Specifically aimed at the German market and a solid range of content 9, uploads a day in Have we left it off?

Is there something we haven't considered? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us venturevillage. Is Spotify too late to the German music party?

Conference June 20, Does he or she represent any real person adequately? Maybe those close to the peak, but most people are not well represented by this average person.

May I remind you that you started this, with your thoughtless comment on my criticism of the use of 'average' in this context? Because really, are we to understand that his writing is merely the work of instinct and muscle memory?

Frankly, I'm offended by your use of the word thoughtless and it just goes to show how small-minded you are. In my experience nearly every unsavvy user I know who wants to watch more videos, uses some kind of proxy addon. I just continue the search. There's usually more than one result, and if the first one doesn't work, the second or third usually does. It unblocks the Youtube search too and also works on Grooveshark, Spotify, Pandora, etc.

Works better than Hola or any other addon i used. ZenMate is great; the best part is that you can decide which proxy to use so you can access content usually only available from the US. It usually does when youtube is rolling out new updates which break the addon. The dev often needs a week or two to fix the problem, right nor example proxtube doesn't work.

A VPN has the added benefit of letting you use Bittorrent without worrying about getting nasty letters. You can easily find many of them on other sites like vimeo.

Blocking the videos without being asked to do so accomplishes two things: It shields YouTube from hypothetical future damage payouts for playing GEMA content without a license, and it also increases public pressure on GEMA by making it look as if they are actively demanding the blocking of lots of content on YouTube which they are not — although they may have unreasonable ideas about compensation.

Other video platforms apparently are less worried about possible legal action and happy to pick up any user left out in the cold by this, and, so far, GEMA hasn't gone after them for it. Well there is not a lof of difference between "Pay me more than you make" and "block the videos" when talking about reality. You can fault the GEMA system for many things, but the problem here wasn't "pay us more" but rather "pay us at all" - as you can read in a pretty read worthy sentence by a german court earlier this year.

What YouTube did, was basically placing the blame preemtively. As you can see by comparing the text on blocked videos before and after said sentence. They'll hunt him down like an animal. Of course i'm on the watchlist, so are you for writing some of the evil words like "TOR project". I guess we should all rub ourselves down with butter so we can all fit into the base at guantanamo? So i can have the freedom to see american videos? I have that and it sometimes gets me a bit paranoid. I wouldn't use proxmate for anything else than youtube, you don't know what data they save from you.

But otherwise it works like a champ. Well, it obviously doesn't work on videos that are private or removed. Proxtube will still try to unlock those, even though it can't, and then it often goes into an endless loop.

You try to forget and focus on other things.
