Does Airport utility need the location airport port active?? William Kucharski William Kucharski. If one of your network devices isn't compatible with the updated firmware, you might be able to reinstall older firmware. This will allow you to set up the hd for use on the network. In my house, I use an Airport extreme from my modem on the second floor ad then an Airport Express to extend my network in an area that I have had poor reception. I always have signal and of course the apple family of products has yet to fail me, but I have noticed this interesting difference. Again, once you launch the utility, setting up the drive should be fairly straight forward.

If using a Windows-based PC, insert the installation disc that came with your AirPort Extreme router into the disc drive on your computer, and follow the on-screen prompts to install the AirPort Utility software.

The password you enter must be between eight and 63 characters. Reset the AirPort Extreme Base Station if you forget your network password or experience connectivity issues. Resetting the AirPort Extreme will reset the password and restore default factory settings.

To perform a full factory reset, disconnect the AirPort Extreme from its power source, press and hold the reset button, then reconnect the AirPort Extreme to its power source while continuing to hold the reset button. This will restore the device back to factory settings. In some cases, your modem may not readily detect AirPort Extreme upon connecting the two devices.

I normally connect to the internet via a cable modem, direct with an ethernet.

I just got an airport extreme base station. I thought this would be a simple hookup: Hook the cable modem to the airport base station and use the airport utility on my mac to set it up. Upon opening AU, it sees the airport base station, I choose continue, but it just hangs on the next step, the one that sets it up. Now, I set up a location called "cable modem" that only has the ethernet port active. Does Airport utility need the location airport port active?? I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

Any thoughts on my "location" question above?? This should be a basic thing. Starting out, I am just trying to get my main computer the one normally just hooked via ethernet to the cable modem to get airport configured. It seems you have to have the location setup to have airport active before you run the utility. Once I did that, boom, connected. Since the airport is "always on," does it have a stealth mode and log like the firewall in Mac OS X.

I have been told you don't need to turn the firewall on if you have an airport base station, but I choose to turn it on for that extra layer of protection. The AirPort Utility window will appear once the update has been installed. The window shown below appears. This is a name for the device that could help you differentiate this AirPort from other AirPort Base Stations on your network, if you have any.

You will need to enter this password to change the settings on the AirPort Extreme. Select the Remember this password in my keychain checkbox to save the password for the AirPort Extreme in the encrypted Keychain Access database.

Select the Use a different password to secure disks and enter a different password if you plan on connecting a USB hard drive to the AirPort Extreme. This allows other users on your network to access the hard drive without having access to the AirPort Extreme settings. Select I want to create a new wireless network. Enter a name for the wireless network in the Wireless Network Name field. This is the name that people will see when they look for your wireless network.
