Review "This is war reporting up there with such greats as Michael Herr's Dispatches " Financial Times magazine "Easily the best book on the Iraq war so far.

One of the best books to come out of the Iraq war" Financial Times Synopsis "Generation Kill" is about the young men sent to fight their nation's first open-ended war since Vietnam. Fast reading, light, funny and playful. All bones were exposed,no punches pulled on 1st Recon, but that is what you want, you want the warts to go along with the beauty. Yin and Yang, black and white-they most be to have a complete picture of this unit, the Iraq War invasion and their role they played. The mini-series glosses over a lot or does not cover many stories from the book. Also suggested if you do read this great book read a companion book by "Hitman 2" himself Nathaniel Fick entitled "One Bullet Away".

These two books together give you the complete picture. One person found this helpful. I read this book a number of years ago from my local library and wanted to read it again. It is truly a classic warts and all look at the spearhead into Iraq. Basically kids being fired up on Adrenalin, loud testosterone inducing music and acting out a real life Call Of Duty video game. But the reality of war soon hits home. This ain't no American Sniper hero worship piece it is brutal, honest and realistic.

There's no 9 to 5 clocking in cards, rules of engagement or honor in War. It is packets of instant coffee to keep you awake, Call an air strike in if in doubt and a round from a 50 cal machine Gun will kill a man Woman or Child. The men are the usual mixture of saints and sinners often at the same time for whom the USMC feels a vocation.

They are shooting civilians one moment and trying to save them the next. Wright is excellent at sketching the boredom of soldiering, the sudden jag of combat, and the long recovery from the combat high. If there is a villain in the piece of non-judgemental reporting it is the officers a number of whom disguised by nicknames are roundly criticised by the men and by the author. First Recon is an elite formation and its performance makes for an interesting contrast with "Ambush Alley".

There's something fascinating about this series which has lead to me thinking about it often over the years, to the point that I finally just bought it on Amazon as digital content. What makes this an interesting tale is the less-than-gung-ho story that's being told - you have unseasoned officers, compromisingly dull-witted captains and career soldiers vying for medals, all alongside your everyday, competent soldiers just trying to get by.

In fact, once the journalist had finished his piece, he went on to write a book about his experiences, which this show is based upon, and when the show went on to be made for HBO by the folks who would go on to make The Wire , several of the actual soldiers from the company notably Rudy Reyes took roles in the show.

It's a very human story, with some moments of genuine humour, some very frank coverage of life as a soldier the first combat poop! Thought-provoking and award winning, this one will stay with you for a while. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This is an account of what a reporter sees as he accompanies Marine 1st Recon into Baghdad in Showing how the soldiers try to cope with confusing conditions, poor supplies, boredom and occassional bouts of violence.

When their orders often seem to lead to actions that are misguided and pointless, sometimes leading to innocent deaths, as the rules of engagement seem uncertain and shifting, some soldiers find themselves increasingly uncomfortable about the competence of members of their command and the nature of their presence in Iraq. It also depicts the culture of the combat unit and the types of personalities that they tend to contain. A brilliant series, but not as broadly accessible nor as fascinatingly complex as 'The Wire' from the same producers and writers.

Generation Kill should not be seen as an action movie, but as a great depiction of one sideshow of the Iraq War, showing how chaotic, incompetent and tragically wasteful the deployment of even modern US forces can be. The film 'Fair Game' would be a good companion film to view with this. This is a brilliant miniseries that deserves far more recognition that it gets currently.

This isn't some gung ho all american propaganda fest. The failings of the individual marines, whether it be racism, lack of general education, almost bloodthirsty psychopathy and the American command structure is laid bare without any attempts to hide the sometimes atrocious behaviour of the troops and commanders.

Quite frankly i am amazed this even got made. It is based on a series of articles written my a rolling stones yes rolling stones reporter who was imbedded with the marines. These articles won a number or prizes and so he wrote a book, "Generation Kill". From this that we have this. Don't imagine this is action packed, it centres more around the marines themselves and areas of their lives we rarely see on film, having said that there are some very good action scenes particularly Ep.

The acting is excellent all round. I can't rate this series highly enough. One person found this helpful. Really good dramatisation of the 2nd Iraq war from a US marine unit's perspective. It is very much like The Wire in that it demands a lot of concentration to follow and uses a lot of acronyms you need to pick up.

All the best photos from TV's biggest night. Search for " Generation Kill " on Amazon. Following multiple recon marines during the invasion of Iraq in , a group of mixed personalities, you see the dysfunctionality of the military, and on other times, how formalized and heroic it can be. A Rolling Stones reporter joins reconnaissance marines invading Iraq and recounts the mix of horrors and hilarity he encounters during his time there.

Written by Ernie Mastroianni. I'm also glad there is no music. Music though moving would have taken away the grit to this story and given it a more artificial feel. It's amazing how much of the dialog and situations are straight from the book, and how perfectly spot on they are showing Recon Marine culture.

I'm glad Rudy and Kocher got to play themselves. Though I only personally know Pappy out of these characters, it's obvious they are working as hard as they can within Hollywood's tradition to portray it as it happened. I hope they continue this series at least until the end of the invasion. I can't wait to see the action at the bridge and the other ambushes.
